I was hunting chuckars with a friend of mine when we came a cross some tracks in the snow so we followed them together and we caught up to them as they were climbing a little hill about 20 yards away so I get ready for them to fly just then I here him shoot ground poundin them I was so suprised I didnt even shoot I was pretty mad but didnt say anything I was wondering what you thought about that and if you have any similar stories.

I might be mad at the miscommunication, but not the "Ground pounding" of the birds.

I think choosing to harvest an animal one way or another is up to the individual. Obviously, the two of you have different thoughts on the subject.

A good analogy in my clouded mind would be an archery hunter being "mad" about a rifle hunter shooting a deer. Different methods, same result.

MMMM, chukars sho am good. :goony:
Today is a very sad day.

If you can't ground pound chuckers, shoot an in-line with a scope on the muzzle loader hunt, or shoot your bow from the back of your pickup with your wife driving. what is this world coming to? :-D

I personlly dont like the ground pound.
A guy I know has to ground pound because he sucks at the wing.
I think its all about skill if you **** only shoot a little your more than likely a ground pounder.

I do not like the ground pound method at all. That is just me though. I am not aware of any law that makes it illegal, but I do not do it anyway. This stems from a Phez hunt that I was on a while ago. I hunt with dogs, and my dogs are like my kids. I was just along for the ride on this hunt, as my brother and two of his workers had paid to go on a Phez club. They did not have dogs so they asked if they could take mind. Of course my answer was yes, only if I would be handleing them. The two had never hunted them before and got the Idea that when my dog went on point that there was a bird to shoot and it did not matter if it was in the air. We all walked in on the bird and one of them just shot the bird, he was only 6-8 ft away from it and my dog was only 3 away from it. I was seriously mad. I couldn't communicat with them very well but they knew that I was **** off. My brother explained in spanish that they can't do that because it was not safe and that they might shoot my dog, which in turn i wouldn't be letting those two fly before I shot either. Well we went on and had a pretty good time for about thirty minutes, and on the fourth bird it happened again. Needless to say I packed up my dogs and left them to hunt on foot. This situation is different that yours because they were twenty feet away and it doesn't sound like you had dogs or at least they were in no danger but it doesn't promote safeness to say a new hunter that doesn't understand. What if those were the only birds that you seen and a new person was with you. He may go with someone else who has dogs and wind up putting them in danger. I disagree with this and wouldn't hunt with someone that does this. To me this is not right, but that is only me. Others may have a different opinion and they are entitled to have it. Just my 2 cents.

I dont like to "ground pound" birds. Dogs and others are a big safty issue. If the bird is flying away from you it just feels more safe. On ducks though, I have shot some that were pretty much on the water. Their feet were touching the water, does that count. Just put the bead on the head and pull. If it does then yup Im a ground (water) pounder.
One box of three inch BB, $15.00...One duck boat, mud motor, and a Super Black Eagle, $8500.00...Crusing up to the loading dock, SKUNKED, priceless.

I was taught growing up that shooting ducks on the water was illegal, and it was explained to me that it was an issue of fair chase. I was never told one way or another if ground shooting upland birds was legal or not, but I automatically transferred the rules of ducks over to other birds. I found out later that it is technically not illegal to shoot upland birds on the ground, but I still don't because I don't see the point. Part of the experience for me is having a flying target. I figure rabbits are more than enough practice and opportunity for ground based targets.

Just like FB, I do ground pound turkey also. :hunter:

What does everyone do with deer and elk? Do you wait for it to run or wait until it is standing still so you can "ground pound it"? Do you shoot it at 50 yds or wait until it is out there 400 yds. Same situation with a bird just standing there.

The way I see it is if someone is a better shot at a bird standing instead of flying he is less likely to just wound the bird. Isnt a clean kill the idea to hunting or is it to see how difficult of shot we can make with no regards to whether we kill or wound the animal?

Each person is going to have a different way of hunting and a different view of the next persons. Who is to say which is right or wrong.

Shot hitting the ground or flying through the air with no backstop. Which is actually safer?

If there are dogs around, there is no question as to which method is safer!
